Olympus Sonic 260 Ultrasonic Multiplexer

Implements multi-transducer and array applications for flaw detection and thickness measurement in composites, plastics and metals with computer-controlled sequencing and timing. The Sonic 260 provides per-channel flexibility and signal conditioning when used in tandem with an advanced ultrasonic test instrument.

The Sonic 260 is an eight-channel ultrasonic multiplexer that allows a single flaw detector to perform like eight individual instruments. The 260 can be used with any ultrasonic instrument capable of Dual or Through Transmission Mode testing. The pulser of such a flaw detector is used to trigger any of the 8 channels of the 260. A second Sonic 260 can be added to increase the number of channels to 16.

Since each channel of the 260 has its own tunable Square Wave Pulser, Damping, and Attenuation controls, it is a straightforward process to balance the response from multiple transducers or a transducer array.

The Sonic 260 utilizes an advanced square wave pulser, whose pulse width can be individually adjusted for each channel, so that the pulse output exactly matches the frequency of the transducer or array element. This pulse "tuning" results in increased resolution, sensitivity, penetration and performance.

Controls & Specifications
Channel Select: Knob selection of 1 through 8 indicates number of channels to be used. Second switch- 1-8/9-16 - permits the addition of a second multiplexer.
Pulser Output: Square wave. (Hi-Lo switch) Hi position: 300 V into 50 ohms. Lo position: 30 V into 50 ohms.
Pulse Tune: 50 ns - 500 ns continuously adjustable. Provides individual pulse width adjustment to each square wave pulser.
Damping: 30 ohms to 1 k ohms adjustable (fixed position is 100 ohms). Provides adjustable damping of pulser output for each channel.
Gain: 20 dB of Gain with 50 dB of Attenuation in steps of 1 dB.
Pe/tt (Single/dual): Selects operating mode -Pulse Echo or Through Transmission.
Gates: Gate 1 or Gate 2 input with Gate 2 either latched or disabled.
Step/run: Selects the sequencing mode -either manual (Step) or automatic (Run).
Internal/Computer: Selects either Internal control or External (computer).
Trigger: Internal or external triggering.
RF Signals (Back panel connectors): Quad 1 provides output of channels 1-8 (or 1-16 using second Multiplexer). RF In is the input from a second Multiplexer.
