One of the hottest segments of the video industry today is commercial duplication. Demand over the past few years for prerecorded video tapes has skyrocketed. More and more S-VHS recorders are being sold for home use and the demand for prerecorded S-VHS tapes is increasing. Nowhere is this more evident than in Japan, where S-VHS recorders account for nearly 40% of home video sales.

In response to this, JVC has developed an S-VHS duplicator based on the popular BR-7030U 3-in-1 VHS duplicator, the BR-S777U. Like the BR-7030U, the new BR-S777U features three record-only tape transport units built into a single cabinet, making possible substantial savings in space, power consumption, and peripheral costs. Moreover, the BR-S777U functions as both a VHS and S-VHS duplicator so separate machines are not required for production of the different kinds of software.

The BR-S777U is equipped with separate luminance and chrominance (Y/C) inputs. Using separate Y/C signals assures the best signal quality during the duplication process, and results in better dubs in whichever format (VHS or S-VHS) is used. In addition to SP recording, the BR-S777U is capable of dubbing tapes in the S-VHS EP mode.

In addition to the S-VHS recording capability, the BR-S777U improves on the BR-7030U's performance in other ways. The highly- regarded ID recording capability has been doubled with the provision of a built-in 8-digit ID code generator. In combination with the optional external code generator, this permits recording of 16-digit codes which can include not only the unit's serial number, but the date and time common to all units for even more precise tracking of each tape's history. A rear-panel QC OUT connector has also been added for centralized monitoring of signal waveforms.

Serial remote control capabilities have also been enhanced on the BR-S777U. Control of all operation modes, including AGC, NR, and Audio Limiter is now possible, as well as switching between recording modes (VHS, S-VHS/SP, S-VHS/EP). Other features on the BR-S777U include Hi-Fi VHS stereo, 34-pin remote control connector, three tape run indicators, three 5000H hour meters, Dolby-B noise reduction for the linear audio tracks, audio level meter (selectable between Hi-Fi and normal, left and right).

Maintenance is facilitated because each recording unit easily slides out of the main chassis. The BR-S777U also has a comprehensive diagnostic warning system that can alert operators from a distance, because of the large LED indicators. Front panel test points make troubleshooting easy. A unique automatic head cleaning system also reduces downtime.

Besides commercial video duplication, the BR-S777U has other applications. Many television stations have to clip on-air programs for checking and filing purposes and usually require several copies. Since the BR-S777U can record three tapes at a time, clipping time is saved and the resulting quality is high enough for distribution and for libraries.
