NEC UNIVERGE WL Access Points

UNIVERGE WL 1250 and 1251R Access Points deliver optimal security, performance and coverage for 802.11 wireless networks. Each works in conjunction with UNIVERGE WL Wireless Controllers to provide robust, cost effective wireless LAN (WLAN) services to enterprise environments.

UNIVERGE WL 1250 Access Points are equipped with internal radios and sectorized antennas. A model is available with optional connectors for connectivity to external antennas. All models utilize multi-mode 802.11 a/b/g radios. All models are plenum rated. The various radio capabilities and deployment options of the UNIVERGE WL 1250 Access Point make the UNIVERGE WL solution ideally suited for an enterprise environment.

The UNIVERGE WL 1251R Remote Edge Access Points extend UNIVERGE WL’s security, performance, and RF management capabilities to enterprise remote offices. They communicate with UNIVERGE WLAN Switches and WLAN Appliances via a Wide Area Network (WAN) link, enabling IT managers and network operators to deliver consistent Wireless LAN (WLAN) services to all enterprise locations, regardless of geography.

The UNIVERGE WL 1251R Remote Edge Access Points communicate with WLAN controllers via most standard WAN technologies, including T1, Frame Relay, ATM, DSL, ISDN, and switched 56k. By leveraging the Lightweight Access Point Protocol (LWAPP), UNIVERGE’s Remote Edge Access Points can automatically detect the best available WLAN controller or controller(s) and download appropriate policies and configuration information with no hands-on intervention. This enables IT managers to centrally control SSIDs, security parameters, and software loads for unified, enterprise-wide WLAN services.

UNIVERGE WL 1250 Access Points combine simultaneous data forwarding and air monitoring functions. This eliminates the need for additional monitoring modes, which reduces the cost of deploying a wireless network. In addition, this simplifies network design and deployment and maximizes RF security by extending real-time monitoring to every corner of a wireless infrastructure.

Rapid traffic forwarding capabilities enable the UNIVERGE WL 1250 Access Point to support real-time voice, video and data services. In addition, each is aware of neighboring access points, enabling effective traffic management through load balancing. This feature also ensures maximum network uptime, as clients can easily be routed around a failed access point to the closest available alternative.

UNIVERGE WL 1250 Access Points support the emerging Lightweight Access Point Protocol (LWAPP), a specification to ensure interoperability between Access Points and Wireless Controllers. UNIVERGE WL 1250 Access Points seamlessly integrate into a wireless network and provide long-term investment protection by adopting this standards-based protocol.

UNIVERGE WL ACCESS POINT BENEFITS

Zero-Touch Configuration and Management - UNIVERGE WL Access Points require no user configuration. Deploying hundreds of UNIVERGE WL 1250 Access Points is simple – just plug them into any device running standard Ethernet. A UNIVERGE WL Access Point will automatically locate UNIVERGE WL Wireless Controllers over the Ethernet infrastructure. Once validated, the UNIVERGE WL Wireless Controller automatically programs all appropriate security, Quality of Service (QoS) and other policy information on the UNIVERGE WL Access Points.

Enhanced Security - Each UNIVERGE WL Access Point works in tandem with UNIVERGE WL Wireless Controllers to create a completely secure wireless environment. UNIVERGE WL Access Points ship with a built-in X.509 certificate to prevent unauthorized access to a UNIVERGE WL network. Furthermore, when administratively enabled, UNIVERGE WL Access Points support 802.1x authentication / encryption and are hardware-enabled for the 802.11i standard. UNIVERGE WL Access Points also play an active role in RF-layer security. Through integrated real-time air monitoring services, they help detect and contain rogue Access Points and prevent RF-layer attacks, ensuring that malicious users cannot access sensitive corporate resources or disrupt normal activity.

Qualities of Service (QoS) - UNIVERGE WL Access Points are an intrinsic component of the UNIVERGE WL comprehensive QoS framework. With intelligent queuing and contention management schemes, they provide effective resource management of the air space. This makes the UNIVERGE WL solution ideal for real-time applications such as voice. The QoS capabilities of the UNIVERGE WL system fully support the IEEE 802.11e standard. Older UNIVERGE WL systems can be made fully compliant via a simple software upgrade.
